Punjab Kings produced a dominating performance to defeat defending Champions Mumbai Indians easily in the 17th match of IPL 2021 played at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Friday.
Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul won the toss and decided to field first. Rohit Sharma was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned to not out in the very first over.
It was an ideal start for the Punjab side as Deepak Hooda made a breakthrough getting rid of Quinton de Kock who again failed to give a good start to the Mumbai Indians side on a slow pitch of Chennai. Ishan Kishan looked out of sorts against Punjab bowlers. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma showed some intent against Punjab pacers. At the end of the first six overs, Mumbai Indians made 21 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Ravi Bishnoi was bought into the attack and dismissed Ishan Kishan with a lovely catch by KL Rahul. Rohit Sharma looked in good touch putting bad balls away for boundaries. At the end of the first timeout, Mumbai Indians made 39 for 2.
Surya Kumar Yadav played some lovely shots against Arshdeep Singh along with Rohit Sharma who looked in good touch hitting boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking. Rohit led from the front reaching fifty off 40 balls. At the end of the second timeout, Mumbai Indians scored 88 for 2.
Coming into the attack, Bishnoi got the breakthrough dismissing Surya Kumar who tried to reverse sweep but provided a simple catch to Chris Gayle at short third man. Surya and Rohit added 79 runs for the 3rd wicket. Mohammed Shami dismissed the dangerous Rohit Sharma in the 19th over to stem the flow of runs. Arshdeep Singh grabbed Hardik Pandya’s wicket despite being hit for a six by Pollard.
Mohammed Shami bowled a stunning 20th over giving away just 6 runs and took Krunal Pandya’s wicket. Mumbai Indians posted 131 for 6 in 20 overs with disciplined bowling by Punjab Kings.
Chasing down 132 runs to win, Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul provided Punjab Kings a quickfire start putting pressure on Mumbai Indians bowlers. Both played with intent hitting boundaries at will making life easier. At the end of the first six overs, Punjab Kings scored 45 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Rahul Chahar was bought into the attack and troubled Punjab Kings openers. Chahar struck for Mumbai getting rid of Mayank Agarwal playing a half-hearted shot giving a simple catch to Surya Kumar Yadav ending a strong 53 runs opening partnership. At the end of the first timeout, Punjab Kings scored 57 for 1.
Chris Gayle looked out of sorts against Mumbai Indians bowlers not able to take singles. KL Rahul looked confident with his stroke play and maintaining the required rate. After the initial struggle, Gayle upped the ante putting pressure on Krunal Pandya and Jayant Yadav. Punjab Kings ended the second timeout at 108 for 1.
KL Rahul led from the front and completed fifty off 50 balls. Chris Gayle also enjoyed himself hitting some big sixes. The experienced duo added unbeaten 79 runs for the 2nd wicket to help Punjab Kings register a commanding 9 wickets win with 14 balls to spare.
Punjab Kings 132 for 1 in 17.4 overs (Rahul 60, Gayle 43, Chahar 1/19) beat Mumbai Indians 131 for 6 in 20 overs ( Rohit Sharma 63, Surya Kumar Yadav 33, Bishnoi 2/21, Shami 2/21) by 9 wickets.
