IPL 2021 Match 9: Sunrisers collapse to give Mumbai Indians a win

Mumbai Indians held their nerves to register a good win over Sunrisers Hyderabad played at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Saturday.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first. Rohit Sharma was in sublime touch hitting the ball well putting pressure on SRH bowlers while Quinton de Kock struggled with his timing. At the end of the first six overs, MI openers scored 53 for 0.

David Warner bought in Vijay Shankar into the attack and delivered immediately getting the wicket of MI captain Rohit Sharma trying to hit a big shot providing an easy catch to Virat Singh at deep midwicket ending a strong 55 runs opening partnership. Rashid Khan troubled Quinton de Kock with his variations. Vijay Shankar got his second wicket getting rid of Surya Kumar Yadav taking a return catch on his follow-through. Mumbai Indians ended the first timeout at 71 for 2.

After the timeout, SRH bowlers troubled Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock not allowing them to score runs easily. Mujeeb Ur Rahman got the wicket of de Kock providing an easy catch at deep midwicket to substitute J Suchith. SRH missed a golden chance to run out Pollard. Mumbai Indians looked in trouble at 101 for 3 at the end of the 2nd timeout.

Ishan Kishan's struggle came to end as Mujeeb Ur Rahman dismissed him down the leg. Vijay Shankar dropped a simple chance of getting rid of Pollard. Soon after, Hardik Pandya was dismissed cheaply in the 19th over. Kieron Pollard smacked 2 successive sixes off Bhuvneshwar Kumar during the 20th over helping Mumbai Indians post 150 for 4 in 20 overs.

Chasing a modest total of 151 runs to win, Warner and Bairstow started cautiously. Mumbai Indians took the review for a caught behind to dismiss Warner, but the decision was not out. Bairstow took the attack to Adam Milne putting him under immense pressure. Warner also gave good support and time the ball brilliantly. At the end of the first six overs, SRH scored 57 for 0. With that, the first timeout was called.

After the timeout, Jonny Bairstow was dismissed in an unfortunate manner as he stepped onto the wickets off Krunal Pandya’s bowling. Manish Pandey's struggle continued providing an easy catch to Pollard at long-off. Virat Singh making his debut along with Warner looked comfortable. A superb direct throw ended in the run-out of Warner.

Rahul Chahar struck twice in one over getting rid of Virat Singh and Abishek Sharma to put enough pressure on the SRH batting line-up. Vijay Shankar spanked two sixes off Rahul Chahar’s bowling. At the end of the second timeout, SRH scored 120 for 5.

Abdul Samad fell short of the crease as Hardik Pandya produced a superb direct throw. Boult produced a brilliant yorker to dismiss Rashid Khan. SRH innings went into more trouble as Bumrah got the wicket of well-set Vijay Shankar.

With 16 runs required off the final over, Boult produced superb deliveries to get rid of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mujeeb Ur Rahman giving Mumbai Indians 13 runs win.

For his 35 off 22 not out, Pollard was awarded the man of the match. In tomorrow's doubleheader, RCB will face KKR in the first match at Chennai while Delhi Capitals take on Punjab Kings at Mumbai.

Mumbai Indians 150 for 5 in 20 overs (Quinton de Kock 40, Pollard 35*, Vijay Shankar 2/19, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 2/29) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 137 in 19.4 overs (Bairstow 43, Warner 36, Chahar 3/19, Boult 3/28) by 13 runs.
